Law Enforcement Training Courses

The Statewide Comprehensive LEL Support and Distracted Driving for Peace Officers program elevates traffic safety throughout the state of Texas. The Law Enforcement Liaison team works in an all-inclusive roles with the Texas Department of Transportation to provide FREE educational training on several traffic safety topics.

Build a Grant

Are you interested in obtaining funds to support officer overtime for traffic enforcement? Funds are available and easily obtainable to make a positive effect on Texas driving behaviors and improve roadway safety, and your agency can learn how to build and submit a STEP Grant. This course will walk you through the process of building the grant from beginning to end.

Grant Management (STEP 101)

Have you been awarded a STEP Grant and unsure what to do next? Are you just interested in what the process is all about? This course will familiarize agency staff with all of the aspects associated with the management of a STEP grant to include tracking grant activities, meeting grant requirements, monthly reporting, and completing and submitting forms for agency reimbursement.

Distracted Driving: Law Enforcement

This 4-hour TCOLE approved course is offered free of charge to all agencies/peace officers in Texas.  Law Enforcement has certain distractions that are specific to the profession that others do not have. This class will not only cover how to minimize the number of on-duty crashes each year (and the liability associated with them) but will also include tactics and techniques for recognizing and enforcing distracted driving violations in the public. 

This course covers the most common causes behind LE crashes and how to prevent them. Using real LE dashboard and bodycam videos we will break down and diagnose ways to minimize danger to officers and agencies, while increasing the odds of officer survival on our roadways.

Child Occupant Restraint Enforcement

is a FREE, 4-hour TCOLE credited course: created to create an awareness of the importance of CPS (Child Passenger Safety) education and enforcement in preventing child passenger deaths and injuries.

Strategic Traffic Operations

is a FREE, 4-hour TCOLE credited course: created to refocus Law Enforcement on the benefits that traffic enforcement can have on reducing crash fatalities and social harm in your community. Topics will cover available STEP grant funding, using available data to improve your community safety and a refresh of the 7 Step Violator Contact. Learn to take traffic stops beyond the ticket and find out what resources are available to you and your community.
